Fjölmiðlamógúllinn Al Neuharth, stofnandi USA Today, segir Bush tvímælalaust versta forseta Bandaríkjasögunnar

Neuharth, fyrrverandi yfirmaður Gannett fjölmiðlaveldisins og stofnandu USA Today, lýsir því yfir í grein í USA Today að hann sé nú kominn á þá skoðun að Bush yngri sé tvímælalaust versti forseti Bandaríkjasögunnar. Í greininni biðst hann ennfremur afsökunar á að hafa gagnrýnt demokrata fyrir að segja akkúrat það sama. Fyrir ári síðan taldi hann upp fimm verstu forseta bandaríkjanna fyrr og síðar:

• Andrew Jackson,
• James Buchanan,
• Ulysses Grant,
• Herbert Hoover,
• Richard Nixon 

Neuharth, hélt því fram að útilokað væri að Bush gæti talist lélegri forseti en þessir herramenn. En nú hefur hann semsagt skift um soðun. skv. Editor and Publisher:

"I was wrong. This is my mea culpa. Not only has Bush cracked that list, but he is planted firmly at the top." By top, of course, he means bottom.

Neuharth, after calling the Iraq war Bush's "albatross," concludes: "Is he just a self-touted decider doing what he thinks right? Or is he an arrogant ruler who doesn't care or consider what the public or Congress believes best for the country?

"Despite his play on words and slogans, Bush didn't learn the value or meaning of mea culpa (acknowledgement of an error) during his years at Yale.

"Bush admitting his many mistakes on Iraq and ending that fiasco might make many of us forgive, even though we can never forget the terrible toll in lives and dollars."

Editor and Publisher benda þó á að stjórnmálaskýrendur séu þó enn margir að spá forsetanum einhverskonar "comeback". Almenningur virðist hins vegar frekar aðhyllast skoðun Neuharth, og í nýrri könnun Pew Research er "approval rating" forsetans óbreytt frá fyrri könnunum, skitin 33%. Það er samt eitthvað mjög ófullnægjandi við prósentutölur sem mælistiku á tilfinningar og afstöðu: þó almenningur sé ósátt við frammistöðu forsetans er fólk samt kannski ennþá hrifið af manninum? Það hefur allavegana verið afstaða Chris Matthews, sem hefur hvað eftir annað haldið því fram að fólki líki við forsetann.

Nýjasta könnun Pew hrekur þessa undarlegu hugmynd. Pew biður nefnilega fólk að nefna eitt orð sem það telur best lýsa forsetanum:

George W. Bush's job approval rating stands at 33% in the current survey, virtually unchanged from a month ago. The general dissatisfacion with the president also is reflected in the single-word descriptions that people use to describe their impression of the president. While the public has consistently offered a mix of positive and negative terms to describe Bush, the tone of the words used turned more negative in early 2006 and remains the case today. In the current survey, nearly half (47%) describe Bush in negative terms, such as "arrogant", "idiot", and "ignorant". Just 27% use words that are clearly positive, such as "honest", "good", "integrity" and "leader".

As was the case a year ago, the word mentioned more frequently than any other is "incompetent". By comparison, from 2000 through 2005 "honest" was the word most frequently volunteered description of the president. Even among the positive words used there has been a decided change in tone over the years. Superlatives such as "excellent" or "great" were relatively frequent in the early years of Bush's presidency, but are offered less frequently today.

Hmmm...hversvegna kemur þetta mér ekkert á óvart??

Hver er þá í hópi þeirra bestu?   Clinton? - Carter?   Nei, þetta eru einir þeir mestu aumingjar sem Bandaríkin hafa haft sem forseta.  Fái Bandaríkin fleiri svoleiðis forseta mun múslíma-öfgahyggja blómstramst sem aldrei fyrr eins og þegar Carter og Clinton voru forsetar.
