Bush, Rumsfeld og Tony Snow ósammála um hvað forsetinn hafi yfirleitt átt við með "stay the course"

Um daginn hélt George Bush því fram að hann hefði aldrei sagt að Bandaríkin yrðu að "stay the course" í Írak - og að hann væri altaf opinn fyrir nýjum hugmyndum og væri alltaf að leita að nýjum leiðum til að vinna stríðið í Írak. Þetta fannst öllum sem hafa opnað dagblað eða kveikt á kvöldfréttum undanfarin tvö til þrjú ár vera merkilegar fréttir, því Bush hefur ekki tjáð sig um stríðsreksturinn í Írak án þess annaðhvort lýsa því yfir að stríðið væri unnið, það væri við það að vinnast, eða að það yrði að "stay the course".

Þó Bush og ríkisstjórn hans hafi reyndar gert útúrsnúninga og veruleikaviðsnúning að einkennisorðum sínum, virðist sem þetta seinasta útspil forsetans standi aðeins í nánustu samverkamönnum hans. Tony Snow reyndi að útskýra hvað forsetinn hefur verið að segja:

Q Tony, it seems what you have is not "stay the course." Has anybody told the President he should stop calling it "stay the course" then?
MR. SNOW: I don't think he's used that term in a while.
Q Oh, yes, he has, repeatedly.
MR. SNOW: When?
Q Well, in August, because I wrote a story saying he didn't use it -- and I was quite sternly corrected.
MR. SNOW: No, he stopped using it.
Q Why would he stop using it?
MR. SNOW: Because it left the wrong impression about what was going on. And it allowed critics to say, well, here's an administration that's just embarked upon a policy and not looking at what the situation is, when, in fact, it's just the opposite. The President is determined not to leave Iraq short of victory, but he also understands that it's important to capture the dynamism of the efforts that have been ongoing to try to make Iraq more secure, and therefore, enhance the clarification -- or the greater precision.
Q Is the President responsible for the fact people think it's stay the course since he's, in fact, described it that way himself?
MR. SNOW: No.

Með öðrum orðum, forsetinn hefur ekki notað þetta orðalag í langan, langan tíma, og þess utan er ekki hægt að ætlast til þess að forsetinn taki ábyrgð á því að fólk taki mark á því sem hann segir: Hann meinti aldrei að það ætti að "stay the course" þegar hann notaði það orðalag, og það er ekki honum að kenna að fólk hélt að hann væri að segja "stay the course".

Og það besta er að við eigum ekki heldur að taka mark á því þegar forsetinn heldur því fram að hann hafi aldrei sagt "stay the course"... Donald Rumsfeld sagði í viðtali við Sean Hannity að stefna forsetans væri eftir sem áður "stay the course"...

HANNITY: A lot of debate has no emerged over the phrase “stay the course,” and what that actually means. “Well, the President is backing away from staying the course.”

RUMSFELD: Aww, that’s nonsense.

HANNITY: He’s not backing away from staying the course?

RUMSFELD: Of course not. The concern was that it gave opponents the chance to say, “Well, he’s not willing to make adjustments,” and of course, just the opposite is true.

Semsagt: forsetinn hefur aldrei sagt að stefna Bandaríkjanna væri "stay the course" - Tony Snow segir að það eigi hvort sem er ekki að taka mark á forsetanum, og Rumsfeld segir að það hafi aldrei hvarflað að forsetanum að það ætti ekki að "stay the course"? Update: DNC (Democratic National Committee) hefur sent frá sér sjónvarpsauglýsingu þar sem Bush, Snow og Cheney skiptast á að segja "stay the course, stay the course, stay the course" og svo er skipt yfir í Bush að segja "we have never been stay the course" - ásamt skilaboðum frá DNC: MR President, America deserves more than a change in rhetoric, America deserves a change in policy". Það er hægt að sjá auglýsinguna á Americablog.
